Who we are
This is Built Different, a site written by Keith J. Wilson. Our website address is: https://builtdifferentmen.com.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Email addresses
If your email address is collected for the purposes of communication with you, it will be retained on the site until you unsubscribe from receiving any and all information from us. We do not use it for any other purpose than that.
Subscriptions to The Toolkit are handled by MailPoet, which stores your email address on this website rather than on a third-party mailing service. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise share the list with anyone.
If you contact us through the contact form, we receive the name, email address and message you send, and we keep them only so we can reply.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
Our analytics provider also sets cookies in your browser — see the next section.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics on every page of this site to understand how people find it and which essays actually get read. It tells us things like how many people visited, which pages they landed on, roughly which country they were in, and whether they arrived from a search engine or a link. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and sends that information to Google, who process it on our behalf.
We do not use it to identify you personally, and we never connect it to your email address, your comments, or anything else you have given us. Google’s own privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
If you would rather not be counted, you can install Google’s opt-out browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, or block cookies in your browser settings. The site works exactly the same either way.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Who we share your data with
Nobody, other than the service providers described in this policy — the spam detection service that checks comments, and Google Analytics. We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
If you subscribe to The Toolkit, we keep your email address until you unsubscribe.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have subscribed, commented, or have an account on this site, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also ask us to erase any personal data we hold about you. You do not need to give a reason. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Analytics data is sent to Google, as described above. Nothing else about you is transmitted to anyone in the normal course of running this site.
How to reach us
If you want a copy of what we hold, want it deleted, or just want to ask a question about any of this, use the contact page and we will sort it out.
